The NAT Port Mapping Protocol (NAT-PMP) is a network protocol for establishing network address translation (NAT) settings and port forwarding configurations automatically without user effort.[1] The protocol automatically determines the external IPv4 address of a NAT gateway, and provides means for an application to communicate the parameters for communication to peers. NAT-PMP was introduced in 2005 by Apple as an alternative to the more common ISO Standard[2]Internet Gateway Device Protocol implemented in many NAT routers. The protocol was published as an informational Request for Comments (RFC) by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in RFC 6886.

NAT-PMP runs over the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and uses port number 5351. It has no built-in authentication mechanisms because forwarding a port typically does not allow any activity that could not also be achieved using STUN methods. The benefit of NAT-PMP over STUN is that it does not require a STUN server and a NAT-PMP mapping has a known expiration time, allowing the application to avoid sending inefficient keep-alive packets.

NAT-PMP is the predecessor to the Port Control Protocol (PCP).[3]

To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), connect to the base station's wireless network. For any 802.11n or 802.11ac AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or Time Capsule (TC) you can connect to either the base station's Wi-Fi network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the base station's LAN (opposing arrows) ports, and then, use the AirPort Utility to make these settings:


1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.

(Note this is the device that you want to access from a remote location.)

AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Edit > Network tab

  • Verify that the option Router Mode = DHCP and NAT
  • Click the '+' (Add) button under DHCP Reservations.
  • Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
  • Reserve address by: MAC Address
  • MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
  • IP Address: <enter the desired Private (LAN-side) IP address that you want to reserve from the DHCP pool of addresses>
  • Click 'Save'


2. Setup Port Mapping on the base station.

AirPort Utility > Select the base station > Edit > Network tab

  • Description: <enter the desired description for what you are mapping>
  • Public UDP Ports: <enter the appropriate UDP port value(s)>
  • Public TCP Ports: <enter the appropriate TCP port value(s)>
  • Private IP Address: <enter the reserved IP address of the host device (from step 1)>
  • Private UDP Ports: <enter the same Public UDP Ports or your choice>
  • Private TCP Ports: <enter the same Public TCP Ports or your choice>
  • Click 'Save'
