To use some DISM features in WinPE, such as siloed provisioning packages, you may run the latest version of DISM from a separate location.

Each time you boot WinPE and want to use these features, you'll need to install and configure the drivers needed for DISM, including the wimmount.sys and wofadk.sys drivers.

The CopyDandI.cmd script copies the version of DISM from your local installation of the ADK to a folder which you can use in WinPE.

Therefore, due to its importance in helping you roll back a Windows upgrade, don’t delete the Windows.old folder if you’re still testing your hardware and software compatibility with Windows 10, as you won’t be able to easily revert back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 if you do. But also note that you don’t have an unlimited amount of time for this process: Windows itself will automatically delete the Windows.old folder about 30 days after the upgrade if no compatibility problems have. It was introduced back in Windows Vista, and this folder is automatically created when you upgrade from one version of Windows to another, like from Windows 7 to 10 or when you install major updates like the Anniversary update. This folder contains all the necessary data, files, and other settings of the previous Windows installation. Ten days after you upgrade to Windows 10, your previous version of Windows will be automatically deleted from your PC. However, if you need to free up disk space, and you’re confident that your files and settings are where you want them to be in Windows 10, you can safely delete it yourself. The Windows 10 update saves files from your previous installation so that you can revert back to it if you need to. Deleting those files can get you back up to 20 GB of disk space. You'll need the Windows 10, version 1607 version of the Deployment and Imaging Tools from the ADK.

Important Don't overwrite the existing DISM files on the WinPE image.

Start the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment as an administrator.
From the technician PC, copy the Deployment and Imaging Tools from the Windows ADK to the storage USB key.

Option 2: Add DISM to the WinPE RAMDisk.

Note: this will add roughly 4MB to the size of your DISM image, which may affect performance.

On your technician PC, install the Windows ADK for Windows 10.
Mount WinPE. For WinPE 3.x, mount the file: sourceswinpe.wim. For WinPE 4.x and 5.x, mount the file: sourcesboot.wim.
Copy the DISM folder from the Windows ADK into a new folder in the mounted WinPE image.
Important Don't overwrite the existing DISM files from the system32 folder in the WinPE image. Instead, create a new folder on the host computer to copy the Windows ADK files into.
Unmount WinPE.
Create WinPE bootable media, or replace the WinPE image file on your existing removable media.
